Grooming is essential to maintain the health and wellbeing of your dog.  It is particularly important to keep your dog's nails at a reasonable length so that the nails do not get too long and cause discomfort

Little and often is the key with trimming the nails.  This keeps the quick retracted back into the base of the nail and therefore you are able to keep the length of the nails much shorter.  You are far less likely to cut the quick if you trim tiny slithers off the length on a regular basis.

Always take care when cutting the nails to avoid cutting the blood vessel in the claw known as the quick.

TOP TIP!

Sometimes I find my dogs protest a lot less if I stand to their side, face their tail and pick up their feet as a blacksmith would do when putting shoes on a horse. For me I find that I can see the nail more clearly.  If I stand in front of my dog and attempt to pull their feet out in front of them, they can get quite stressed and continuously pull their feet away from me making trimming the nails sometimes more difficult.

Another tip is to give a reward after each nail is cut, then when they get the idea that a good dog means a treat, you can then reward after you have trimmed a whole foot.  I have one giant schnauzer who absolutely hates his nails being cut but tolerates it because he knows that after i've trimmed each foot, he will get a nice reward.  He moans and groans the whole time but puts up with it for his treat!!
